In Albania, vehicle registration plates are issued by the regional directorates of transport.

The regional code is a two-letter abbreviation of a district name. For instance, the abbreviation for the Tirana region is TR. A four-digit number and a letter follow. The letter indicates the order of allocation of each series of numbers. Thus, a plate ending in M will have been more recently released than one ending in L in the same region.
