Vaseline is a genericized trademark reference to petroleum jelly. It is also a brand of skin creams, lotions, cleansers, deodorants and lubricant produced by Unilever.

The first known reference to the name Vaseline was by the inventor of petroleum jelly, Robert Chesebrough in his U.S. patent: "I, Robert Chesebrough, have invented a new and useful product from petroleum which I have named Vaseline…".

The etymology of the word comes from German wasser (= water) + Greek elaeon (= oil).
