I think in the UK varsity means Oxford vs Cambridge. Anyone know? Secretlondon 21:18, 31 Mar 2004 (UTC)
- At a glance it seems that way - most of the use I've heard is for at least one and usually both (e.g. the Varsity Line between the two, the Varsity [rugby] Match, Varsity newspaper at Cambridge). However I'm not sure if it always has been just a term for Oxbridge rather than a short form of "university" - "uni" is a relatively modern (and Australian influenced) term used in the UK. The presence of a good number of other institutions listed on Varsity match as well as the Cape Town newspaper suggest that "Varsity" used to be more widely but is now generally only used in more formal or historic contextes (e.g. the Varsity Line) Timrollpickering 20:16, 24 July 2007 (UTC)
