Map showing city of Vancouver, Washington Territory, 1888. From the official map of the Clarke County auditor. Public road crossing military reservation at Fifth Street. Western boundary at "West J Street," northern boundary at 13th and 19th streets. Eastern boundary of city at military reservation is now Interstate 5.
The park northwest of sixth and "West C Street" (now Columbia) is Esther Short Park. The Sisters of Charity hospital was known to locals as "St Joseph's Hospital." The public wharf was at the foot of Main Street, stretching to "West B Street" (now Washington Street). The military reservation was approximately four square miles and stretched from the Columbia River to what is now East Fourth Plain Boulevard.
The railroad which departs south of the public levee and just west of the city is the Vancouver, Klickitat and Yakima Railroad, which would shortly be parallelled just to the west by the Union Pacific.
