Uwai Akitane (1545-1589) was a senior retainer beneath the clan of Shimazu throughout the latter Sengoku Period of Feudal Japan. While under the service of Shimazu Yoshihisa, Akitane became regarded as one of the former's most able councilors among others, also carrying with him the reputation as a man of both wisdom and competency within the field of cultural affairs. It has also been recorded that Akitane had constructed his own personal diary; this piece of literature became seen as a glimpse into the norms encountered by a typical daimyo of the 16th century's feudal period. By the year of 1579, Akitane would be granted control over Miyazaki castle after the province of Hyuga had been subjugated by forces under the command of Shimazu.
