Utopia is a pub on Easter Road in Edinburgh, and was the first pub in the UK to bar Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling after the 2008 Budget included rises in the tax paid by licensed trade customers.
Landlord James Hughes' decision to bar Darling was made after it was suggested the licensed trade saw the increases as a public relations initiative designed to highlight Government attempts to tackle binge drinking.[1]
The campaign spread across a number of social networking and blog sites [2], resulting in more than 200 pubs barring Darling within three weeks of the Budget announcement. [3]
