Uthiri Pookkal is a Tamil film directed by J. Mahendran. The movie was based on Puthumaipithan's short story Chitrannai. This movie is a trend setter [1] in Tamil cinema. Director Mani Ratnam once famously remarked: "If I get anywhere near what Mahendran did in Udhiri Pookkal, I’ll be a happy man."[2] The movie is considered as a break through in commercial Tamil cinema.[3]
