USS Tigress (1871)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The USS Tigress, also known as just the Tigress, was a screw steamer constructed in Quebec, Canada in 1871. Originally a civilian whaler with a home port of Newfoundland, in 1873 she was instrumental in the rescue of some of the members of the United States Navy Polaris expedition. Because of her success in that rescue, she was chartered by the United States Navy to assist in the rescue of the remaining members of the expedition. Unfortunately, that mission as not a success (the remaining Polaris crew had been rescued by another ship) and she was returned to civilian life. [1]
