USS Louisiana (BB-71) was to be a Montana-class battleship in the United States Navy, however she was canceled before her keel was laid. She was to be named in honor of the 18th state.
She was authorized July 19, 1940, and assigned to the Norfolk Navy Yard, Portsmouth, Virginia; but, before her keel was laid, construction was cancelled July 21, 1943. USS Louisiana would have been the third ship to bear that name had she been commissioned. She was the last American battleship authorized.[citation needed]
