[edit] In the operation, Union warships captured eight Confederate vessels;

In the operation, the CSS Ellis was captured. The CSS Fanny and CSS Sea Bird were sunk. The CSS Black Warrior was set afire to prevent her landing in Union hands. The CSS Forrest was burned on the marine railway at the shipyard where she was awaiting repairs to the propeller shaft. The CSS Beaufort and CSS Appomattox escaped up the Pasquotank River. The Beaufort reached Norfolk and served as a tender to the CSS Virginia in the battle of Hampton Roads. The Appomattox was destroyed when she proved to be too wide to fit through the Dismal Swamp Canal locks at South Mills.

Two schooners were captured in the action, one loaded with furniture and the other with corn. This isn't exactly eight Confederate vessels. One commissioned Confederate vessel was captured at Elizabeth City.
