Description

At sea with USS Mahan, Sept. 27, 2002 — USS Mahan (DDG 72) steams in company with USS George Washington (CVN 73) in the Atlantic Ocean during Exercise Mediterranean Shark. Destroyers, such as Mahan, operate in support of carrier battle groups, surface action groups, amphibious groups and replenishment groups. They primarily perform anti-submarine warfare duty while guided missile destroyers are multi-mission (ASW, anti-air and anti-surface warfare) surface combatants.
