I almost had a stroke when I saw Image:WikiGnome.png creepy image in my userbox list. Too bad about the copyright issues with the old one Image:Wikignome.jpg. I'll keep my eye out for another possible replacement. — MrDolomite | Talk 19:26, 10 September 2006 (UTC)

My guess would be that the original image does indeed come from the hand of Palmer Cox who died in 1924. See this image for comparison. According to an image description page on Commons, the original image should come from Palmer Cox: "Brownies through the Union", p. 39 (1895). Could somebody double check this?
