This map has some problems: 1. The small version of it is showing Kansas in gray on the map, but red in the legend (gray for both in the full size version.) Since gray is associated with the CSA this is probably a poor choice anyway, but regardless the legend should be consistent with the map at both scales. 2. The Indian Territory may have been claimed by the CSA but it was United States territory. 3. The "Confederate Territories" were not as pictured and instead were a subset of present day Arizona and New Mexico. They were still United States territories as well. New Mexico and Arizona remained U.S. territories despite a CSA expedition that attempted to claim them and failed. A rump secession convention representing a portion of the territory did not make them Confederate territories any more than Missouri or Kentucky were Confederate states. The map needs to be changed to reflect the actual status of the territories, or removed.Red Harvest (talk) 00:57, 16 March 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, this image should be removed - I would have done it myself LONG ago, except I have not come up with a good replacement. There is no good reason for Kansas to be grey. This map also has been used to display too many different things - not all of AZ territory was ever claimed by CSA. Regarding the gif - it should distinguish territories that were US territories from "territories" that were States that tried to secede - but it is better than this --JimWae (talk) 03:44, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

- I'm of the opinion that we should give folks a chance to update such images to fix problems, but if that isn't done in a reasonable time, then they should be removed from pages. Keeping inaccurate images in articles only leads to spreading of them into other pages, and that makes the need for more accurate maps less apparent to those who could actually make them. The current map is badly fouled up. The more correct version, http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/archive/9/94/20080306095020%21US_Secession_map_1865.svg, should be reverted too, if nothing else. 68.39.174.238 (talk) 18:06, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
