[edit] Summary

I made this graph and hereby release it into the public domain.

Federal public debt data (nominal) is from the U.S. government: [1]

Nominal GDP data (estimates before 1929) from Louis D. Johnston and Samuel H. Williamson, "The Annual Real and Nominal GDP for the United States, 1790 - Present." Economic History Services, October 2005, URL : http://www.eh.net/hmit/gdp/

Note that values of federal debt are given for the first day of the government fiscal year (which has changed twice since 1789), while GDP data is for an entire year (June 1 - May 31 before 1869, calendar years thereafter). For all points on this graph, the date of federal debt tally is contained within the year of GDP accounting.
