Well, I was referring to condom use in general. If they aren't put on and taken off at the right times and in the right way they certainly aren't effective. And, however unlikely it may be, there is always the potential for manufacturing defects (e.g, microtears or holes) which might not even be noticed as "tearing". Also, the term "condom" doesn't necessarily imply latex or polyurethane, and it has been shown that HIV can pass through natural membrane condoms. Those are some potential reasons for condom failure that come to mind. I don't know of any research that has disproved these or shown that there are any others. In any case, it seems like a stretch (no pun intended) to imply that tearing or coming off are the only way that condom sex can fail to prevent HIV transmission. Doesn't it?
