The U221 was a U-boat in the German Kriegsmarine during World War II. She was ordered on August 15, 1945 as a Type VIIc U-boat at the Germaniawerft in Kiel. She was commissioned into service on May 9, 1942 under the command of Oberleutnant Hans-Hartwig Trojer.
She made a total of 5 war patrols in the Atlantic Ocean against Allied shipping. During these patrols U221 sank 11 ships for a total of 65,589 GRT and damaged one ship.
On September 29, 1943 U221 was attacked by a British Halifax of the southwestern Coast of Ireland. The Halifax was shot down, but U221 was sunk. All 50 crew members were killed.
