Unstructured Data Resource

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An Unstructured Data Resource is a term defined in the Data Reference Model (DRM) under the supervision of the U.S. Office of Management and Budget. The Data Reference Model (DRM) is one of the five reference models of the Federal Enterprise Architecture (FEA). Unstructured Data Resource is part of the Data Description part of the DRM. Examples of unstructured data resources would be a word processing file, an image or a presentation.

Data typically is developed in structured or unstructured forms. Unstructured forms are frequently easy for people to use but are difficult to process with a computer. Structured information can be used by both people and computers, but structuring data may require more effort. Unstructured data is used for people to communicate or record information for people. Unstructured data may still have a structure understood by an application, but those structures are for formatting purposes and do not convey any of the semantics of the resource.

[edit] Definition from the DRM

Unstructured Data Resource: A Digital Data Resource containing unstructured data. Unstructured data is collection of data values that are likely to be processed only by specialized application programs.
