Unix-based mallet

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Unix-based mallet is referred to in some distributions of the Unix calendar utility, which may be configured to display entries from a central repository of various important, notable, or trivial dates in history. In some distributions, an entry for August 14 is included which reads:

First Unix-based mallet created, 1954.

The web page http://www.mv.com/users/mem/ego.html offers an explanation for this cryptic entry: "I am tickled by the fact that my birthday is noted in the calendar file distributed with many versions of UNIX these days." The page's author, Mark E. Mallet, was born August 14, 1954, was an early participant in UUCPNET/usenet, and presumably had some association with one of the contributors to the original list of calendar entries.
