[edit] Access for Persons with Disabilities

Persons with hearing impairments may reach library staff to ask reference questions and handle other library business by calling 206-685-1254 (TTY).

Wheelchair accessible study carrels and electronic work stations are available throughout the Libraries. The OUGL Adaptive Technology Alcove has two PCs running adaptive technology software. The Media Center, also located in OUGL, has telecaption equipment as well as wheelchair accessible and lighting-enhanced media carrels. The Adaptive Technology Lab in the Mary Gates Hall Computing Resource Center is wheelchair accessible and offers adaptive equipment. The Health Sciences Library also provides services for the disabled.

Suzzallo Library has several Adaptive Technology Resource rooms for use by UW students registered with the Disabled Student Services office (206-543-8924) (TTY: 206-543-8925). DSS issues key codes for access to these rooms.

The Libraries is committed to providing access to its materials and services to persons with disabilities. Upon request, library staff in all units will assist with book retrieval and bibliographic resources. Because many campus buildings do not meet all ADA accessible standards and library units’ hours vary, it is wise to contact the unit directly to identify accessible routes and facilities and to confirm that assistance will be available during the time of your visit. DSS publishes a handbook outlining wheelchair routes for the entire campus and accessibility of restrooms and other public facilities in all buildings on campus.

[edit] UW Libraries Catalog

The UW Libraries Catalog provides bibliographic information, location, and circulation status for catalogued holdings of the Libraries, including branch libraries and the Bothell and Tacoma campus libraries. These holdings include books, serial titles (but not the articles), and many government documents, maps, and microform sets. Projects are underway to increase further catalog access to government publications, maps, microforms, photographs, manuscripts, and archival holdings. Items in the UW Libraries Catalog can be browsed or searched by author, title, subject, genre, keyword, or call number. Primary access to the catalog is through the Libraries home page.

Summit is a union catalog of the Orbis Cascade Alliance. It combines information from many academic libraries in Washington and Oregon into a single database, and allows users to simultaneously search the more than 25 million items (books, journals, videos and other material) of all member libraries. Authorized users (current faculty, students and staff) of the member institutions can also request books and have them delivered to their local library.

Suzzallo Circulation handles centralized circulation services for the Libraries system. Branches and most public service units offer specialized circulation services, and many interactive services are available on the Libraries home page.

Most materials may be borrowed from the Libraries. UW identification cards (Husky Cards) serve as library cards for faculty, staff, and currently enrolled students. The Library Cashier located in the Suzzallo Library issues borrower cards to eligible visitors. Loan periods vary according to the type of material and among individual library units. Information on circulation policies is available at circulation desks and at http://www.lib.washington.edu/services/borrow/. Eligible individuals may use the Libraries home page to renew material, place holds on items, request materials from other libraries, check their account status, ask that books be sent to the nearest campus library, and, for a fee, have UW journal articles copied and delivered.

[edit] Computing and Networking Services

All library units provide public access computers for searching library and information resources. PCs in the following libraries also offer a variety of software such as MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access, along with CD-RWs: Architecture & Urban Planning, Drama, East Asia, Engineering, Foster Business, Odegaard Undergraduate, Social Work and Suzzallo & Allen. These PCs, called Access+, require users to log on using their UW NetID.

UW students, faculty and staff may use computers in the OUGL Computing Commons and in Mary Gates Hall, and in the health sciences may use the Microlab located in the Health Sciences Library.

UW students, staff and faculty have access to computers, e-mail, the Internet (in campus labs or from home via dial-in modems), MyUW and other online resources, Web servers and training. These computing services are available to anyone with a UW NetID, which can be obtained at a general-access computing lab in Odegaard Library or Mary Gates Hall, or with secure Web access from http://www.washington.edu/computing/uwnetid.

[edit] Copying and Public Printing Facilities

Coin/Card operated copiers are available in all libraries. Copy cards which can be used for both copying and printing can be purchased at dispensers in Allen, Architecture, Chemistry, Engineering, Foster Business, Law, Oceanography, Odegaard Undergraduate, UW Bothell and UW Tacoma Libraries.

Odegaard Undergraduate Library has a staffed copy center. A staffed copy center is also located at UW Tacoma, WCG 105, where copy cards can be purchased.

Copy centers offer a full range of photocopy services, including enlargements, reductions, transparencies and 11” X 17” format. Color copying is available at Odegaard Copy Center, which is open 24 hours from 1:00 p.m. Sunday until 9:00 p.m. Friday, September through June. Self-service color copying is also available at the Architecture & Urban Planning and Art Libraries and in the Maps Collection in Suzzallo.

Public printing from Libraries workstations is available for a fee in the Foster Business Library, Law Library and OUGL copy centers. Self-service print stations are also available in the Art Library, Architecture-Urban Planning Library, Chemistry Library, Drama Library, HSLIC, Mathematics Research Library, Physics-Astronomy Library, and Suzzallo and Allen Libraries.

Print jobs from public computers in the Libraries can be sent to the Copy Center as well as to self-service print stations located in each library.

The Libraries on all three campuses collaborate with faculty to improve the research and information skills of students by providing class-related instruction, orientation tours, Web-based tutorials, quarter-long credit courses and other services.

Interlibrary Loan provides interlibrary loan and document delivery services for UW and non-UW patrons. (Seattle campus's Health Sciences, Social Work, and Law School users are served by their respective libraries.)

For current UW students, faculty and staff on Seattle, Bothell and Tacoma campuses, Interlibrary Loan provides the following services. 1) Patrons may borrow materials or obtain copies of articles not owned by the UW Libraries. (Materials that can be requested through Summit will not be borrowed.) This service is fully subsidized for UW-related needs. Materials for personal or recreational use may be obtained for a fee. 2) Patrons may obtain copies of articles from journals owned by the UW Libraries; fees may apply.

For nonaffiliated users, Interlibrary Loan will lend materials or provide copies of articles from materials in the UW Libraries collections. All services are provided on a cost-recovery basis and fees apply. Individuals seeking to borrow UW material remotely should contact their local library.

[edit] Reserves

Course reserves, both print and electronic, is a service provided by the Libraries in support of UW courses, and is designed to provide a high level of access to material that is in demand by a large number of students. Reserves may be offered electronically, with full-text materials for courses available on the Web, or they may be placed from open shelves into a controlled access area and given short loan periods to maximize access.

The main reserve desk for the entire library system is in OUGL, and branch libraries maintain reserve shelves for materials in their subject areas.

HSLIC maintains a reserve collection of materials in health sciences subject fields.
