University of Manitoba Faculty of Law
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The University of Manitoba's law school is located at the Fort Garry campus of the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. The school began in 1885 as a three-year prescribed reading course, followed by a series of examinations. In 1914, the Law Society of Manitoba and the University agreed to create the Manitoba Law School, a three year programme that would lead to the LL.B. degree and the licence to practice law. In 1966, the Law School formally became the Faculty of Law of the University of Manitoba.
Presently, the school offers both the standard LL.B. programme, as well as an LL.M. masters' degree programme. Manitoba Law is known for the strong advocacy component of its LL.B. programme, which involves mooting, mock trials, oral arguments and appeals. The school has one 13 of the past 31 Western Canada Moot Trial Competitions. [1]
The deadline for application to the school is November 1st, and the school selects 101 students each year. The admissions policy of the school is strictly numbers-based for regular applicants; only a student's GPA and LSAT score are considered. [2]
Christopher Axworthy, QC will take over as Dean on July 1st, 2008.
