University of Baghdad (UOB) (Arabic: جامعة بغداد, Jami'at Baghdad) is the largest university in Baghdad, Iraq.

Both " University of Baghdad " and " Baghdad University " are used interchangeably on its official website, http://www.univofbaghdad.org. The URL favors "University of Baghdad, but "Baghdad University" appears on the homepage. "University of Baghdad" appears again at the top of the English section of the website http://www.univofbaghdad.org/english_main/3.htm, but in the body of the text, "Baghdad University" is favored.

Whereas in the new portal for the University of Baghdad (in English) http://www.uob.edu.iq, (University of Baghdad) is used where it is also abbreviated as UOB.

The university was commissioned by the Royal Government of Iraq in the late 1950's and situated near the Tigris river. Its buildings were designed by Walter Gropius, American Institute of Architects, Louis McMillen and Robert McMillan of The Architects Collaborative, who commenced their master plan in the 1950's for a new University Campus for the Colleges of Engineering, Sciences and Liberal Arts for a total of 6,800 students.

Mustansiriya University, one of the oldest Islamic universities in the world, was incorporated into Baghdad University in 1962. Its main focus is on teaching law and literature.

The campus was expanded in 1982 to accommodate 20,000 students plus support facilities. Architect Hisham N. Ashkouri and Robert Owen developed the full academic space program for the entire campus.

Ibrahim al-Jawady was the administrator of Baghdad University from during 1980s; he finished his doctorate from United Kingdom in 1962.

Baghdad university has suffered with the war on terror in Iraq, with as many as 90% of students dropping out of some classes. This is down to people moving away due to fear, combined with several kidnappings and hostage takings of University Students.[1]
