University Painters is a painting company. The Founder of University Painters began professional housepainting while in college in 1986 and later established the company in 1991.[citation needed] The company grew throughout parts of the country by way of its network of franchised locations primarily owned and operated by college students.[citation needed]

University Painters businesses typically provide the following services: Interior painting, exterior painting, pressure washing, deck staining and sealing, drywall repair, plaster repair, rotted wood replacement, carpentry, custom molding installation, staining services and other home improvement services. Services vary based on the individual business and busines owner of the University Painters location.[citation needed]

Business model

Prior to 2001 most University Painters businesses used primarily college student labor during the summer months to complete its painting projects. During the period from 1999 through 2001 just about all University Painters businesses switched from college student painters to career full time professional painters.[citation needed] The University Painters business owners utilize their own employees and in other cases use University Painters Approved Independent Contractors.[citation needed]

Legal issues

A segment on Fox 5 detailed issues with the contract that Ohio students in 2003 & 2004 entered into with Maxco Development Inc. DBA University Painters. [1]

In March 2006, the Ohio Attorney General filed suit against Maxco Development, Inc (DBA University Painters) for allegedly violating Ohio's BOPPA (Business Opportunity Purchasers Protection Act[2][3]

The Federal Communications Commission has issued an official citation for delivery of unsolicited pre-recorded advertisements to residential numbers.[4]

Following complaints in Maryland, Maxco Development, Inc. DBA University Painters agreed pursuant to a consent order to cease and desist offering franchises in the state.[1]
