University Interscholastic League (UIL)

The University Interscholastic League offers the most comprehensive literary and academic competitive program in the nation. The league provide students with a forum in which to show their excellence and mastery of various subjects by sponsoring 22 high school and 18 elementary and junior high academic contests. More than a half million students participate in UIL academic contests in subjects ranging from accounting to ready writing, science to social studies, journalism and debate.

These activities, are designed to motivate students as they acquire higher levels of knowledge. Students are challenged at multiple levels to pursue areas of interest on their own. While working closely with school coaches, students are encouraged to tackling various academic challenges in pursuit of excellance.

The UIL was established in 1909 was created by Dr. S. E. Mezes. Dr. E. D. Shurter became the director in 1910 ans the League had 28 member schools. The League today operates as part of the University Texas, but is a non-profit, volunteer organization. The UIL is currently the largest organization of its type in the world.

The UIL publishes a monthly magazine entitled The Leaguer to keep people update on contest happening and the UIL itself.
