[edit] History
UCO officially began in 1979 as a college outreach ministry in conjunction with what is now the Word of Life covenant community based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Both Word of Life and UCO are affiliated with the international community of communities known as the Sword of the Spirit which was formed as a part of the religious movement called the charismatic renewal.
[edit] Guiding Principles of UCO
Unity – UCO places a strong emphasis on the call to unity through relationships and collaboration between Christians of various backgrounds, including Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox traditions.
Worship – UCO practices charismatic worship through the exercising of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, including prophecy and the use of tongues, placing emphasis on the active role of the Holy Spirit in living out the Christian life.
Discipleship – UCO encourages personal development and maturity according to Christian principles regarding practical day-to-day living. The primary methods of fostering discipleship include men’s and women’s living households, short-term summer households, small groups, and mentorship.
Fellowship – UCO organizations host frequent large- and small-group social events to foster relationships among its members.
Wisdom – UCO encourages learning and understanding the fundamental doctrines of the Christian faith. This is accomplished through seminars, courses, and Bible studies.
Service – UCO promotes acts of service by facilitating retreats for high school students, conducting day-long service projects for members and staff, and organizing short-term mission trips during semester and summer breaks.
[edit] Structure
UCO is a student-based organization; however, there is a full-time staff team at both the local and regional level. Staff members come from a variety of backgrounds, including members of local Sword of the Spirit communities, the Servants of the Word, and other UCO alumni.
