[edit] History

It was founded by students who opposed the imposition of socialist education by the government of General Lázaro Cárdenas, after struggles and threats from the government in 1935. The university's first name was the Universidad del Occidente which was later renamed Universidad Aut;onoma de Guadalajara, its current and official name. The School's Faculty of Medicine started its first classes on June 5, 1935.

On March 3, 2005 the university celebrated its 70th anniversary.

The last university Presidents were Dr. Luis Garibay Gutiérrez, Dr. Antonio Leaño Álvarez del Castillo and the recently named Lic. Antonio Leaño Reyes.

[edit] Medical School

It is the oldest private medical school in Mexico. The first class was taught on June 5, 1935, the same year of the school's birthdate and its first residency quarters were located on Tolsa Avenue in Guadalajara, in an area donated by Ramón Garibay which later became the university's hospital. Later the hospital was named Hospital Ramón Garibay in honor of its patron. As of late, the Medical School was seen a a state of decline in quality, as expressed by very vocal groups of students. Overall, complaints come from the obviously old material and buildings at ICB, UAG's grounds for medical students. The school upped the quality with adding new multimedia stations to all the lecture halls, and totally refurbishing a restroom set in the center of the International Prgrams classes. Much of the area was also repaved, while National students continue to have mediocre installations and material, despite the huge sums of money that they have to pay.

[edit] Soccer

The school's professional football (soccer) team is named Tecos after the university symbol, the Tecolote, which is the Nahuatl word for owl. The team plays in Estadio Tres de Marzo named for the founding date of the institution.
