United States Navy Boot Camp

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

United States Navy Boot Camp, sometimes known as recruit training, is the program of turning civilians into Sailors. Individuals entering the United States Navy receive training at Naval Station Great Lakes for 8 weeks. Upon successful completion of boot camp, freshly minted Sailors are sent either to various "A" Schools located across the United States, where they begin training to receive their ratings (jobs) or to apprenticeship training, where they then enter the fleet without a designation.

[edit] Overview

[edit] Processing Week

Navy boot camp starts at Building 1405, the Recruit Inprocessing Center. Recruits will arrive at all hours mostly during the night. Here, recruits will undergo medical and dental exams, partial uniform issue, and their first military haircut. You'll learn basic grooming standards, Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), standards of conduct, and the introduction of their Recruit Division Commander (RDC).

[edit] Week One

After Processing Week ends, Week One of Navy boot camp begins. This week is considered the most intense week of physical conditioning. Recruits will take their initial swim qualification test, learn military drill, rank and rate, and the Navy Core Values.

[edit] Week Two

During Week Two, recruits will learn the Navy chain of command, custom and courtesies, and basic watch standing. Recruits will also run the Navy Confidence Course (indoor obstacle course).

[edit] Week Three

Week Three will consist of hands on training. Recruits will learn laws of armed conflict, money management, basic seamanship, shipboard communication, and Navy ship and aircraft identification. Also during this week, recruits will take their first Physical Training Test. This test consists of curl ups, sit-reaches, push ups, and the 1.5 mile run.

[edit] Week Four

Week Four mostly consists of weapons training. Recruits will learn familirization of the M9 and the Mossberg 500 (the Navy no longer gives weapons training on the M-16).

[edit] Week Five

Week Five consists of more Navy classroom time.

[edit] Week Six

During Week Six, recruits will learn shipboard damage and firefighting skills. Recruits will learn to escape smoke-filled compartments, open and close watertight doors, operate Oxygen Breathing Apparatus, and carry fire hoses and learn to extinguish fires. Week Six also consists of the Confidence Chamber (tear gas chamber).

[edit] Week Seven

Week Seven consists of the accumulation of Navy boot camp called Battle Stations. This exercise is a grueling 12 hour exercise of many events learned during boot camp.

[edit] Week Eight

Week Eight is the last week of Navy boot camp. Recruits will then pass all the requirements of Navy boot camp in order to Pass In Review (PIR).
