Union Avenue Opera Theatre

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Union Avenue Opera Theatre (recently renamed Union Avenue Opera) is an opera company based in St. Louis, Missouri. The company was founded in 1994 by Scott Schoonover, the music director of Union Avenue Christian Church. In the summer of 1995, they performed their first opera, Dido and Aeneas by Henry Purcell and since that time have become an integral part of the St. Louis arts community. Union Avenue Opera is the smaller of two opera companies in St. Louis, the other being Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. While both are similar in that they are summer festivals, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis performs their season in English, while Union Avenue Opera stages operas in the original languages, with projected English titles.

Union Avenue Opera's upcoming 2008 summer season will feature Donizetti's L'elisir d'amore, Verdi's Otello and Bizet's Carmen. For its darkly-themed production in October, the company presents Puccini's one-act opera Il tabarro.
