How many countries are federations of states?

Germany, Australia, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, ... ?

They do not all have the words "United States" in their names.

Are they all more recent than the USA, or was there a federation of states before 1789? (I have heard of arguments that the Indian tribes, or some of them, were federations)

There's a list on Federation. Not just states -- can also be provinces (Canada), cantons, regions, etc. –Hajor 00
