The McDonald Observatory is located near the town of Fort Davis, Texas in the Davis Mountains of West Texas, the United States. The site is campus property of the University of Texas at Austin and mainly funded by the university, along with revenues from telescope leases. The observatory is equipped with a wide range of instrumentation for imaging and spectroscopy in the optical and infrared and operates the first lunar laser ranging station. McDonald works closely with, though it is administratively separate from, the astronomy department of the University of Texas at Austin. The McDonald Observatory also produces and consults on StarDate, a daily syndicated radio astronomy segment hosted by Sandy Wood, which airs on stations throughout the nation in both English and Spanish.
