Underground Movement is an episode of Godzilla: The Series from the second season.
[edit] Plot
A group of farmers are complaining about having their crops destroyed, although the only problem in the soil is a drastic drop in amino acid levels. The mayor believes it is an insect causing the problem. As they speak, a gigantic tentacle erupts from the ground and destroys the building.
In New York city, the H.E.A.T. team is being sued by Miami for $50,000,000 in property damage, even though Randy argues that they saved thousands of tourists from "a vampire bat the size of Orlando". The team leaves for Miami to clear their name in a hearing, while Mendel and Randy stay behind to keep an eye on Godzilla. Mendel immediately begins to question Randy's attitude and devotion as a H.E.A.T. member. While Nick and the others are gone, Randy and Mendel discover that a mutant is destroying Michigan. Mendel suggests calling Nick, but Randy says they should deal with the monster themselves. When they arrive, they find tentacles erupting from the soil and run after them, while in the court, the case doesn't seem to be going very well for Nick.
Mendel and Randy are searching for the monster in a jeep, but cannot seem to find it, just as Mendel considers going back, a tentacle emerges and destroys their jeep. They then try to call Nick, but they can't get a signal, leaving them trapped in the forest. Mendel is worried, but Randy assures him that he has experience in the wild. When Randy can't create a simple bonfire, Mendel realizes that he has no idea what he is doing, and Randy reveals that his "experience" was just a week in summer camp. Meanwhile, Nick is trying to get a call from them, but hasn't received one and thinks something is wrong, so Monique traces the location of Randy's phone.
When Mendel gets attacked by the monster's tentacles, Randy rescues him, and Mendel is very grateful. Monique successfully traces Randy's phone to a forest in Michigan, and they leave, not caring whether or not they lose the case. In the forest, Randy and Mendel have surprisingly become Ramboesque "macho men". The monster attacks again, but this time, Randy made weapons and attempts to chop off it's tentacles with an axe. The monster is unharmed, but luckily for them, the other H.E.A.T. members arrive. When the monster's tentacles wrap around the H.E.A.T. helicopter, Godzilla bites them off, but they regrow and wrap around him. Nick and Monique free him by shooting off the tentacles with high-tech laser weapons, but Godzilla is significantly weakened. The tentacles then wrap around Monique, but are cut off before they could kill her.
Nick learns that the monster is a giant, mutated armillaria, a parasitic fungus. And it feeds on amino acids by draining them out of the body, as it did to Godzilla and Monique. They realize they've been aiming for the body, and not the brain, so they travel to the location of the Armillaria's main core. They use their laser weapons to destroy the Armillaria's main nervous system, but when the weapons prove useless, Godzilla uses his atomic breath against it, but again is trapped by the tentacles and freed by the lasers. Godzilla then bites it and tosses it onto a sandy beach with no nutrients, but it's tentacles extend towards a pine tree. Godzilla uses his atomic breath to destroy the tentacles, and continuing until it is nothing but black slime. When they return to Miami, the find that their lawyer won the case.
[edit] Trivia
- The Armillaria could be an homage to Biollante, because both are plant-based monsters with many tentacles.
