[edit] Level of Detail
I'd be interested to know what others feel should be the level of detail in this page. There is currently very little reference to the Laws of Cricket, and I think this maybe ought to be changed. I'm very happy to add references but don't what the article to become too technical. Another thought is who do we want this page to appeal to primarily. As a Cricket Upire myself I know there are very little online resources for information, and interpretation, on the laws of cricket. Would anybody out there be interested in a page analysing each law bit by bit, and if so shoudl that be under-taken on another page, specifically on the Laws of Cricket? Wisden17
- There is a separate article on the Laws of Cricket. I think that the Umpire article should provide a brief overview of the role (ie, match manager), qualities of an umpire, status under Spirit of Cricket, positioning, concentration, signals (but brief), pathways, and links to relevant websites of national cricketing bodies and/or umpiring contacts. (Perhaps I'll contribute something based on my experiences as an umpire and umpires' adviser, when/of I get time). Perhaps something about differences between cricket umpires and umpires in other sports could be included. The lists of Test umpires and "famous" umpires are a joke - there is a much more complete list at List of Test umpires and the duplication is unnecessary. MulgaBill 23:16, 10 January 2006 (UTC)
Yeah I think the lists on the page are bit of a waste of space. I realised after I posted the first message that there is a separate page on the Laws of Cricket, although that could do with some major work on it as well. I like your idea about pathways for umpires (would be interesting to do a comparison between countries), and of the fieldcraft of umpires. I'll add some stuff this week on the qualities of umpires and on positiong etc.. The differences between umpires in other sports may be an interesting section, although would another page not be better. The umpire page could have a comparison section added to it.--Wisden17 14:17, 11 January 2006 (UTC)
Thanks dmmaus for removing the lists. I look forward to your additional stuff Wisden17 and I'm happy to add some stuff, and review your contributions - when I've finished my biogs of Aussie umps. MulgaBill 05:01, 12 January 2006 (UTC)
I've reverted the bit about one umpire standing opposite the non-strikers end. Fairly sure the wicket keeper stands there. And there was already a bit about sometines having more than 2 umpires. Kevin 10:22, 23 April 2006 (UTC)
[edit] link to ICC Elite umpire panel?
Should there be a link to the ICC Elite umpire panel, at least in the "see also" section?--Alexio 10:57, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Disabled and young umpires
I have reversed Moondyne's deletions, because I think it is relevant to make the point that disability and age need not be barriers to umpiring. I have to admit a bias - I have been the mentor to the lad with cerebral palsy, who's now in his fifth year in our country competition. However, I have deleted a specific name, which is certainly not relevant. MulgaBill 19:15, 10 August 2007 (UTC)
