[edit] Career
[edit] The Origins
The Umma Project is a solo project created by Esteban Mejía Mesa.
Before forming a band in 2003, Esteban studied advertising at Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana were he joined forces with Radio Bolivariana (1993-1996) and Javeriana Stereo (1992-1996) to produce -on a weekly basis- two radio shows: Rock al Día and Jazz Contemporáneo.
In 1996-1997 he worked at Warner Music Colombia, where he gained popularity with local radio stations and Latin American bands thanks to his musical knowledge, and promotional skills.
In 2007-2008, he made his debut with the following self-produced albums: "Kosmodrom (EP)" and "Ethereal (La Noche del Terror Ciego)".
Currently, he his rehearsing with other musicians for some public performances during the year.
[edit] Musical Style
Although The Umma Project music is often referred to as Ambient / Electronica, it has been influenced even more by the Post-Rock (melodic, experimental and minimalist) sounds of the 2000s such as Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Sigur Rós and Mogwai.
Also, by Progressive Rock pioneers like Pink Floyd and King Crimson; Led Zeppelin, Neil Young, The Cure, The Church, David Sylvian, Slowdive and Gustavo Cerati.
The Umma Project music also has long improvisation passages at times and live on stage using their studio instruments that ability is clearly highlighted with extended versions of their songs.
[edit] Other Works
In the early 1990s, before joining -partially- The Umma Project in 2008, Ricardo Mejía Mesa was a member of several bands from his native city of Medellín.
