I've started all proper nouns with a captial, as per Wikipedia's Manual of Style. I do have some experience with Linux, so I know that commands entered on the prompt are case sensitive, but that doesn't matter in normal English sentences. (Compare: Konqueror) That said, I'm pretty sure that some of these are acronyms, and should thus be fully capitalized, but I don't feel confident doing this without a citation for the proper expansion. You will definitely want to propose this idea to a larger audience such as WP:PUMP before you run off rewriting the (tens of?) thousands articles relating to Unix and Linux. There has been a "silent consensus" or convention to lowercase Unix tools that are lowercased in their official documents. For example, I find it braindead to refer to the copy utility as "Cp", similarly to "Udev" and "Devfs", because in practice nobody capitalizes them.

The MoS used "Adidas" as an example, which sounds reasonable to me — the lower-case version is simply a part of the visual logo image. But I find it completely unrelated to this case, where it has nothing to do with marketing or advertisement, but is just a convention. -- intgr [talk] 11:56, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

dwlegg: The obvious thing chaps is just to put quote round unixy names, e.g. 'cp', 'udev', 'devfs'. Then you don't have to capitalise them, and you can usually find some way of avoiding starting a sentence with 'cp' etc. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dwlegg (talk • contribs) 21:09, 22 February 2008 (UTC)
