Tyringe
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tyringe is an urban area[1] formerly known as a municipal community (municipalsamhälle), in northern Scania (Skåne), Sweden, with a population of 4,573 (2005).
The original Danish village of Tyringe was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1353. By the 17th century, a more organized village center emerged around the village inn. It grew to an urban area after the inception of the railway between Hässleholm and Helsingborg in 1875, and at the turn of the century, it became known as a popular vacation spa town for vacationers arriving to receive mineral cure treatments at the mineral spring. A sanatorium and several hotels and inns were built during this era, including the upscale Tyringe Kurhotell built in 1904.[2]
In 1923, various metalworking industries were established in Tyringe, resulting in a population increase which in 1929 meant a change in status to municipal community for Tyringe, a status it held until 1970.[3] In Sweden, the term municipalsamhälle was previously used for localities that were centers in a rural municipality, functioning as a "submunicipality" with certain regulations and privileges granted by the king and also in effect for towns. In 1952, several neighboring rural municipalities were added to Tyringe municipality, but in 1974, Tyringe lost its status as a large municipality (storkommun) and became part of Hässleholm Municipality.
Tyringe Church was built in 1925. The architecture includes typical Scanian crow-step gables, and is modeled on Gumlösa Church, which was built in 1191. Since 2006, Tyringe church is no longer open to the public except for mass and various services; it is locked after having been burglarized in March of 2006, at which time the church's silver chalice, paten and chandeliers, among other things, were stolen.[4] Since the 1990s, Scania has experienced a steady rise in crime.[5] This has affected even smaller urban areas like Tyringe.[6] The response rate of the Swedish police in Scania is the lowest in the country. Only one in 100 emergency calls to the police resulted in immediate police response in Scania during 2005, a drop from a 20 percent response rate in 2000.[7]
Tyringe has two schools, the Tyre School and the Vedhygge School. The Tyre School accommodates pupils from the surrounding villages, including Röke, Finja, Matteröd and other smaller villages.
