[edit] Tram vs Light Rail
The description of Tvärbanan was recently changed from light rail to tram, with the reason: Nothing parallel to the 'light rail' neologism is used in Swedish: this line is called a 'spårväg', which translates as 'tram'. That isn't entirely true. Tvärbanan was promoted as snabbspårväg, which is not a very good word, but corresponds to the term light rail. And it really doesn't matter if there is a good translation of it or not - Tvärbanan is a good example of a light rail system. -- Kildor (talk) 19:17, 4 January 2008 (UTC)
- ‘Snabbspårväg’ translates roughly as ‘fast tram’ — it doesn’t attempt to position it as an entirely different technology as ‘light rail’ does. As for matters of classification, there is no clear definition of ‘light rail’ — it’s used for everything from full metros that happen to use small trains through to ordinary tramways, so it seems to me that using the term for systems whose operators do not would count as original research. - My point is that the word snabbspårväg actually is the Swedish word for Light rail. And it is definitely not original research. In SL annual report 2006 english edition, the name Tvärbanan isn't even mentioned once. Instead, the system is simply called Light rail (and Nockebybanan is called Nockeby light rail). VTI has written an article where Tvärbanan is said to be light rail. And in the LRTA list, Tvärbanan is classified as light rail. -- Kildor (talk) 22:39, 4 January 2008 (UTC)
