I think it is important that the article references that the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is only recognised as a state by Turkey. Without this information, there is no indication of why the event was controversial in the first place. Simply stating that TRNC is recognised by only one state is simply a statement of fact, putting the controversial event in context. I don't believe including it to be POV.
