Tuntun
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tuntun was the screen name of Indian singer and comedienne Uma Devi Khatri (11 July 1923 – 24 November 2003).
Uma Devi was born in Uttar Pradesh and raised by her uncle. She was an accomplished vocalist, and sang her first song in a movie in 1947, working with legends like Naushad Ali. She reached her peak as a vocalist in the movie, "Chandralekha". Because of her older style of singing and limited range, she found it difficult to compete after that with the rising vocalist stars, Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosale.
Naushad gave her a comedienne's role in the movie, Babul, and the comical screen name, Tuntun, reflecting her rather heavyset frame and the belligerent tone which she adopted for her comedienne's role in that movie. She appeared in 140 movies. One of here very popular song was 'Afsana leekh rahi hoon' from the movie 'Dard'(old)
