TUAS - the tactical use of the armed struggle was the name given by Irish Republicans to the strategy of 'military cessation' (ceasefire is a termed frowned upon by republicans for historical reasons) implemented between August 1994 and February 1996.
At the time many thought TUAS actually stood for the totally unarmed strategy, though the IRA retained and strengthened its military capacity and readiness throughout this period.
The IRA ended the cessation with a bomb attack on London's Canary Wharf in 1996.
In 1997, following the election of Tony Blair as British Prime Minister and Bertie Ahern as Irish Taoiseach the IRA began a new and, lasting ceasefire.
