The Security Express Robbery was at the time the largest cash robbery in the United Kingdom, where thieves stole £6million from the Shoreditch headquareters of Security Express.

The robbery allegedly funded the later and bigger Brinks Mat robbery[1].

  • Freddie Foreman: a career criminal, fled the country to Marbella to escape from authorities. After living in Spain for several years, he was taken into custody by Spanish authorities while on board a plane and extradited to the United Kingdom on July 28, 1988. Although found not guilty of participating in the robbery, he was convicted for laundering the stolen cash and was sentenced to nine years imprisonment on April 4, 1990[2]
  • "Mad Dog" Hickson - a career criminal, he was quickly arrested. Accused of handling cash from the robbery, he was jailed for six years and then went to ground[3]
  • John Knight - initiated into a life of crime at the age of twelve by his elder brother Ronnie. Mixed robbery with running a number of successful legitimate businesses. He planned and executed the Security Express robbery, for which he served twelve years in prison
  • Ronnie Knight - a Cray twins associate, he was married to actress Barbara Windsor for twenty years, during which time he owned a number of West End clubs, as well as engaging in many less legal enterprises. After returning from Spain, he was sentenced to seven years for laundering money

  • Clifford Saxe - a former armed robber, who died while awaiting extradition from Spain in 2002. Saxe was believed to be the mastermind behind the robbery, after living in Spain for many years with no evidence of working[4]
  • DS Peter Wilton - joined the Metropolitan Police in 1958 and the Flying Squad in 1980. Led the investigation and was promoted to Detective Superintendent during the course of his investigation into the Security Express robbery. He retired in 1989[5]

A GANG of 10 men escaped with pounds 6m in used banknotes during a raid at the east London headquarters of Security Express in 1983, in what was then Britain's biggest cash robbery. A guard was threatened with being set alight unless he handed over the key to the vault. Ronnie Knight, the former husband of EastEnders actress Barbara Windsor, was jailed for his part in the raid. Only pounds 2m was recovered[6]
