LOVER OF NHS BOSS HAS WORSE RECORD EXCLUSIVE 2,000 struck down when he was in charge By Nick Owens 14/10/2007 Related Articles IRAQ HERO ILL WITH BUG More Sunday Have your say: Sunday forum The partner of shamed Maidstone Hospital boss Rose Gibb has an even WORSE record of fighting superbugs than her. Mark Rees, who quit his NHS job earlier this month, was in charge of three hospitals in which more than 2,000 patients were struck down in three years with killer clostridium difficile. Barking, Havering and Redbridge Hospitals NHS Trust - headed by Mr Rees - may now face scrutiny from the Healthcare Commission, which is carrying out checks on wards across Britain. At Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust in Kent, where Gibb was boss, 1,400 patients were infected with the bug - which killed 90 in Britain's worst ever outbreak. Mr Rees exited shortly after a hospital patient had been given a chemical-induced abortion to save her life, but was left alone to deliver the baby because no midwives were available. But despite the pair's appalling record of failure, they are still hoping to pocket a £600,000 NHS payout as their contracts had two years left to run. Last night pals of Miss Gibb said she would "fight tooth and nail" to have the pay-off authorised. At her trust, staff tried in vain for three years to get hospital bosses to tackle C-diff with more nurses and cleaners. Campaigner Geoff Martin said: "Staff reported a culture of bullying. If you spoke out you were told shut up or lose your job. Managers refused to listen." Miss Gibb also paid consultants £3.5million despite a shortage of nurses - identified as the key reason for the C-diff outbreak. A spokesman for Mr Rees's ex-trust said: "Tackling C-diff and MRSA is one of our top priorities." Comment: Page 14[1]
