- The privatisation of many of the UKs publicly owned Businesses began with the National Freight Corporation (NFC) Management Employee buy-out in 1982. The Corporation was the only named privatisation objective in the Conservative Party manifesto for the General Election of 1979, and its successful buy-out and subsequent performance was used and referenced as the model of corporate efficiency and profitability arising from privatisation of state-owned corporations. This paper provides a report of work in progress that intends to analyse and evaluate the NFC as a Business History case study before, during and after its privatisation. The paper provides a framework to understand the historical context of privatisation on an embryonic logistics business operation that would evolve into the globally ranked No 2 logistics business of the 21st century post-privatisation.
