Watch out, Big Frank!
PARLIAMENTARY hopeful Margot James hit the headlines last month as one of a new breed of Tory ladies. Now she’s in the news again, after she beat off 40 rivals to be selected on Tuesday to fight Labour MP Frank Dobson for the Holborn and St Pancras seat at the next general election. But at first sight, ‘new breed’ Ms James, 46, bears a remarkable similarity to last election’s model, solicitor Roseanne Serrelli. She was also young, blonde, dynamic and good-looking, the polar opposite of gnarled former health secretary Mr Dobson, and trailed in third behind the Lib Dems. Moreover, Ms James assured me enthusiastically over the phone yesterday (Wednesday), far from being averse to traditional Tory jam-making, she likes nothing more than to whip up a Delia Smith marmalade. But more trail-blazing insights were to follow. The daughter of a self-made businessman, after graduating from the London School of Economics, Ms James “saw an opportunity” and set up her own business in pharmaceutical PR. This grew into a group, which she sold for a tidy sum in 1999, leaving her set up for life in her early 40s. So here is a potential Maggie Thatcher who will never need her political career to be bankrolled by a Denis. Not only that, but Ms James is refreshingly upfront about her own partner, TV presenter Jay Hunt – another glamorous woman – with whom she shares a home in South Kensington. She is thrilled that I know Ms Hunt as the style and fashion guru from hit BBC TV dating series ‘Would Like To Meet’. Apparently, a new series of the show is in preparation, appropriately titled ‘Celebrities Would Like To Meet’. So Frank had better watch out. Ms James, a former non-executive director of Parkside NHS Trust, says she is “also a health specialist” and ready to take him on.[1]
