Betty Moran was raised in the beautiful countryside of Chester County, on a farm in Malvern, Pennsylvania, which is now the site of her Brushwood Stable, a thoroughbred racing and breeding operation. Brushwood Stable consigns yearlings to the major sales in Kentucky and New York and maintains thoroughbreds with various trainers throughout the country, having its first horses with Morris Dixon. Betty Moran attended Shipley School, where she was a former Pennsylvania State Champion squash player. She continued her education at Mary Washington College in Virginia, where she majored in Biology. In 1951 she married Maxwell Moran and they had six children, three sons, Michael, James and Ranney and three daughters, Betsy, Frances and Caroline. All carry on the family traditions of Thoroughbred breeding, racing and community philanthropy. Through the years Betty fox-hunted and became an accomplished rider, winning the parent-child competition at the Devon Horse Show with her eldest daughter. She actively enjoys tennis and golf and travels extensively to many exotic lands. She has a great appreciation of art and is devoted to her 15 grandchildren. Betty Moran's dedication to Chester Country philanthropy keeps her and Brushwood Stable actively involved in the community. She has always had a special interest in helping those less fortunate and spent many years as a volunteer in numerous capacities. She is the current chairman of the Radnor Hunt Races, is a board member of the Brandywine Museum and Conservancy and has served on the Board of Paoli Hospital. She is very active in her Church, St. David's and is a founding member of the Chester Country Community Foundation, is a Board Member of the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair and the Bryn Clovis Charity Foundation. Brushwood Stable has consistently sponsored the annual Handicapped Riders Division of the Devon Horse Show at the Thorncroft Equestrian Center.
Other accomplishments include: ~First win over fences in the Tom Roby Steeplechase with Tip's Eve in 1977 ~Won the American Grand National in Charlottesville with McAdam in 1984 ~Won the Belmont Stakes in 1985 with Crème Fraiche, the only gelding to win this race, trained by Woody Stephens with Eddie Maple on top. Crème Fraiche's time of 2:27 was the second fastest since Secretariat's 2:24 in 1973. In his career, Crème Fraiche won 17 of 64 starts, which included back-to-back victories of the 1986 and 1987 Jockey Club Gold Cup. He finished his racing career with more than $4 million in earnings. ~Won the Pennsylvania Hunt Cup and the New Jersey Hunt Cup in 1986 with Tom Miller ~Won the National Hunt Steeplechase at Radnor with Tostadero, in 1989 ~Won the Thomas Stokes Memorial Challenge Cup at Radnor with Turkmaster in 1996 ~Won the Martell English Grand National with Papillon in 2000, making Mrs. Moran one of only 9 American Owners to ever win the historic race originating in 1839

Feb. 16, 2005 -- Thoroughbred Charities of America, a fund-raising organization that distributes grants to Thoroughbred rescue, retirement, research, education, backstretch and handicap riding programs, recently announced the appointment of Betty Moran to its Board of Directors. Moran owns Brushwood Stable, a racing and breeding operation. "If ever a definition of a philanthropist is needed, just describe Betty Moran", says Herb Moelis, President and Founder of TCA. "Here is a woman who is truly a philanthropist in heart and action. All one needs to do is ask and Betty steps forward. We are honored to have her on the Board of Directors of Thoroughbred Charities of America." Brushwood Stable in Malvern, Penn., has an outstanding reputation among the nation's premier equine auction buyers and sellers. Primarily a thoroughbred racing and breeding operation, Brushwood maintains a stable of 25 Thoroughbreds with various trainers throughout the country. Moran's dedication to philanthropy is matched by her personal accomplishments of championship squash, raising 6 children, and fox-hunting. Most notable in Brushwood Stable's accomplishments is Crème Fraiche. In 1985 he became the first and is still the only gelding to win the third jewel of racing's Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes.
