Tripoli Castle also known as The Fortress of St. Gilles, believed to have been built in the 12th century BC by the Phoenicians. The castle has been since modified by the Mamluks and Ottomans. In 1268, the castle and the Crusaders were occupied and destroyed by the Mamluks. The castle offers an exceptionable view of the ancient city of Tripoli, and is an important symbol of the Phoenician history of Lebanon.
Today the site is a well preserved site, popular amongst the tourists who visit Tripoli.
