[edit] Summary

tri-tert-butylamine molecule

[edit] Names:

  • tri-tert-butylamine
  • tri-t-butylamine
  • tri-(tert-butyl)amine
  • tri-(t-butyl)amine
  • tritertbutylamine

[edit] Formulas:

  • C12H27N (shared with many compounds)
  • (C4H9)3N (shared with tributylamine = tri-n-butylamine, triisobutylamine, tri-sec-butylamine)
  • ((CH3)3C)3N
  • SMILES: CC(C)(C)N(C(C)(C)C)C(C)(C)C
  • InChI: 1/C12H27N/c1-10(2,3)13(11(4,5)6)12(7,8)9/h1-9H3

This molecule is an example of the steric effect.

The steric effect of tri-tert-butylamine makes electrophilic reactions, like forming the tetraalkylammonium cation, difficult. It is difficult for electrophiles to get close and attack the the lone pair of the nitrogen. (Nitrogen is shown in blue.)
