There is evidence of some early settlements on the island, one of them is located underneath the new cricket pitch next to the community centre. Further information on the history and purpose of King Charles' and Cromwells castle and the Blockhouse would be useful. When Cromwell came to get rid of the Royalists a Tresco local took them to a island near Tresco called Northweathel during the night which delayed Cromwell a day.

[edit] Wartime history

I don't know the details, but understand that in WW2 the island was used as a departure point for spies entering occupied Europe. Please can somebody elaborate on this.

It was also used as a base for seaplanes, not sure what type, and they managed to sink german submarines, im not sure how many.

[edit] Tourism

The creation of the Island Hotel and the expansion of time share holiday homes on the island would be appropriate as tourism is the driving force of the economy on the island today.

[edit] Transport

A heliport was built on grassland outside the Abbey in 1983 which remains operational today. Several flights a day arrive (Mon - Sat) from Penzance to ferry passengers to and from the island. The previous "teahut" passenger terminal was replaced by a larger purpose built buiding in 2004. In summertime, the area is also used as a cricket pitch, they play on sundays so that helicopters dont come in when they play, but they have now moved the cricket pitch to the comunity centre near the primary school.

[edit] Tresco Marathon

The annual marathon was first run on the island in 2000. The island is too small to run a point to point race and so seven and a half laps must be run to make the 26.2 miles. The event was organised to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. --geodynamo
