[edit] Merge with Railway post office?

This type of car seems to me to have the same function as the railway post office (RPO) cars used in North America. I think a merge would be in order, but under which name? slambo 11:28, July 26, 2005 (UTC)

  • You could just add a link to the TPO article on the RPO page under "see also", and vice versa, keeping RPO for america and TPO for europe? Our Phellap 18:53, 26 July 2005 (UTC)
I had considered that. In fact, that's the main reason I didn't put any of the merge templates on either article. However, since the only real difference besides the name that I can see is the history of the cars' development, which would make them good candidates for merging in my mind. slambo 19:03, July 26, 2005 (UTC)
  • My argument for retaining two articles was to save any arguing over which name should be used. Most people in Europe probably haven't heard of Railway post office for example, and Americans wouldn't know what Travelling Post Office was. Also, the TPO article currently refers mainly to the British TPO, giving links to the various types of vehicle used on the British Rail system. Perhaps a general article on transporting mail by rail should be written (with a suitably neutral name), giving links to RPO and TPO for further info? Our Phellap 20:13, 26 July 2005 (UTC)
Sounds good. Maybe I can work up something this week for it... unless someone else beats me to it, of course... slambo 20:17, July 26, 2005 (UTC)
  • Perhaps merger of the RPO and TPO pages is now a moot point, since it is 4 months past the date of the original discussions. If a merge is still under consideration, I believe that separate articles would better serve the subjects at hand. RPOs and TPOs do share many common characteristics, but the developmental history for the American and the British versions were unique, and it would seem difficult to properly cover that diversity in a merged article. Cross linking the two pages under the "see also" mechanism should be sufficient. RI-Bill 04:40, 28 October 2005 (UTC)
