Talk:Transformer design
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This page was started as a spin off from the page on Transformers. It's incomplete at this time, but new texts have been added. Since a lot new is being added each day, some sections may not be formatted. Anyone who would like to help, please do as it's hard to do it all. craxd Sep 28, 2006
Two pics are needed at this time. The first is a pic of a hysetresis curve with the B-H curve portion showing in the top right section of the graph. Next, a pic of a graphical B-H curve itself showing flux density (B) up the left side, and oersteds (H) along the bottom. There's a hysteresis curve on the Transformer page, can it be used? craxd Sep 28, 2006
- Yes you can use any image you find on Wikipedia! 8-)--Light current 02:38, 29 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Needs work
Oh my. This is a very ambitious how-to manual for a general-knowledge encyclopedia. I don't think detailed discussions of tricks-of-the-trade, simplifications, rules-of-thumb, and other related tradecraft really belong in an encyclopedia article. This one needs lots of TLC and should be simplified from its present condition. Talk rather about whys and hows of transformer design, not cook-bookery. And what about RF transformers, audio transformers, wall warts, 1000 MVA EHV power transformers, etc. etc. etc....? --Wtshymanski 22:39, 18 May 2007 (UTC)

The very simple reasons are twofold. (1). It is incomplete. (2). It is not up to date. Please, before considering the matter, look at the cited references and there dates. It appears that the page was written from someone with an degree in electrical engineering, probably from his notes on the subjuect, from some time ago. I work in electronics professionally (run a company), and although I do not consider myself a transformer expert, I have 6 boods on my shelf that date from 1988 to 2004, the most recent one summarizing the more current theories about construction of a transformer that have appeared in the publisehd literature over the last decade. Toroids are not even treated in this article, which are critical for switching power suplies used in nearly all personal computers and household appliances (this braod use makes them perhaps the most abundant medium power transformers on the planet). Transformer design and construction is a vital topic for todays world, and an article would be very much appreciated. I encourage the author(s) to stretch themselves into the topic, perhaps quadruple the size of the article, and bring it up to date. It is good work, but it stops far to short for anyone looking for detailed information on the subject. A short portion of the article could cover the basics in a page for someone who simply needed background. But as it stands, the technical portion is out of date. I salute the effort, and hope that with this encouragement, it will grow into the stature required. Best wishes. TSEngineering (talk) 21:31, 1 March 2008 (UTC)
