Talk:TransLink fares (Vancouver)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I'm moving this article to TransLink fares (Vancouver) to meet Manual of Style naming conventions. I will also change all the section headers to sentence-caps as per the MoS once the move is done. — Saxifrage ✎ 21:39, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
Does this subject warrant an entry of its own? Looking over the contents, there is a definite overlap with the main TransLink article. I think that this article could easily be condensed and merged into the "Fares" section of the main TransLink article. There are also some non-NPOV statements, especially in the opening paragraph. --Ckatz 01:33, 22 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Previous text that needs revision, sources, and balance
I've been editing the fares article and I think that some parts need work before they go back in. My concern is that the article reads (in some sections) like a critique of Translink, rather than as a NPOV overview of the fare structure (which is what this article should be). If there are criticisms of the Translink fare system -- and there certainly are, as in any public transit system -- let's mention the who and why... --Ckatz 06:02, 1 April 2006 (UTC) (+ the next paragraph)
- "Their fare system is basically efficient, but can be confusing to first-time users. The fares are also criticized for being too high, for both adults and children. This is especially difficult for those who cannot afford to live in Vancouver proper, where land is very expensive, and have to live in the suburbs farther east, north or south. And due to the zone system, a person living farther east pays more for transportation, which can be compared to the high gas prices as of 2005."
- Needs a comparison of fares in other regions, and a source for the criticisms.
- Readded above info in a more NPOV-compliant matter. also added critisims sectionSelmo 02:46, 16 April 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Fare zones
The north-to-south order is kind of confusing and looks a bit messy. Wouldn't using alphabetical order be easier to read? -→Buchanan-Hermit™/!? 01:36, 31 May 2006 (UTC)
Two problems with the map: Lions Bay is in zone three, not zone two; and shouldn't we be using the usual zone colours (yellow, red, green - rather than red, orange, blue)?--Xeon 01:56, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
- Lions Bay is no longer in zone 3. TransLink moved it to zone 2 in early 2006, along with Bowen Island. -→Buchanan-Hermit™/?! 02:01, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] "Criticisms" removed
The text of the "Criticisms" section has been removed. There's a "NPOV" tag on it, and there aren't any citations at all for the claims. The old text is as follows:
"There are many criticisms about the fare system. The most popular would be the complaint of high prices. (Compare to Toronto Transit Comission and Société de transport de Montréal). The zone system has also been criticized as putting an unfair burden on commuters from the eastern suburbs."
This text needs to have some sort of references, and some method of putting the claims into context, before it is reinstated. The links to the TTC and Montréal systems don't support the claim of high prices by themselves. There would have to be a proper analysis (which we can't do - remember "no original research") of the three systems, looking at factors like the size of the systems, the respective population bases, and so on. --Ckatzchatspy 09:02, 17 September 2006 (UTC)
- The only source I could think of off the top of my head is the bus riders union. However, it fails WP:RS, because it's not peer rviewed. -- Selmo (talk) 01:00, 24 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Quirks
Far by the biggest quirk in the system is the fact if you're riding one bus, you don't actually need to buy a 2 or 3 zone ticket, only if you plan to alight or get on again. I haven't recalled an instance in which a driver checked tickets since BC Transit days. Stormscape 07:17, 1 October 2006 (UTC)
- Apprently you didn't ride the 491 Burrard Station last summer. The driver was checking randomly at Airport Station, just before crossing into Vancouver. I've also had transit police coming on board to check tickets, on the 98 B-Line. -→Buchanan-Hermit™/?! 01:59, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] FareSavers
This isn't really relevant, but where does one buy FareSavers? There's info on where to buy tickets in the above section. Can you get the faresavers at the same places (super markets, etc)? AdinaBob 18:45, 8 June 2007 (UTC)
- sigh* dumb question, it's already answered, and I actually read that section even. AdinaBob 18:46, 8 June 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:UPass 2008.gif
Image:UPass 2008.gif is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.
