[edit] Updating the news
There are a few things to consider when updating the "In the news" section of the Portal:Trains:
- Remember that we are writing for an international audience, so try not to center all the train news around one country. This may be difficult on some days, but there's always something going on around the world.
- Include a link to the original news item. List only the URL in single brackets, with the source name in parentheses. If there are multiple pages with stories about the news item, list them all. A full citation can be included within <noinclude> .. </noinclude> tags to simplify the copy/paste to the archives.
- Include links to Wikipedia articles. Avoid red links because this is a Featured portal. However, check the links that you do create to ensure that they are pointing at the appropriate articles and not at disambiguation pages or redirects.
- Limit the number of news items to six. When we get more than six items in this section, its size becomes rather disproportionate with the other sections on the page. The column that this section is in is narrower than the other column, so its length is only magnified.
- Include at least one free image on every news item; fair use images are not allowed in the Portal namespace. Generally, one image is enough, but if the news item is about a merger between two entities or a connection between two countries, it may be appropriate to show two images. To add an image, use one of the image templates described below. Image selection priority should be as follows:
- An image of the event that occurred.
- An image representative of the event.
- The flag of the region where the event occurred.
- List news events in date descending order. The most current event should be listed first, the least current last. New items can be added in positions other than first as long as they are listed in the proper date order.
- Copy the news items (with a complete reference citation) to the appropriate YEAR in rail transport page. Today is June 12, 2008, the current month's events page is June 2008 in rail transport, the current year's events page is 2008 in rail transport.
[edit] Image templates
There are a few templates that are used on this page to make the images at the right:
- {{Trains portal/News image}} (talk) - Displays a single image with an optional border.
- {{Trains portal/News image 2}} (talk) - Displays two images
- {{Trains portal/News image and Wikinews}} (talk) - Displays a single image with an optional border and also displays the Wikinews logo and link to the relevant article there
- {{Trains portal/News image flag}} (talk) - Displays a flag
See the appropriate talk pages on each of these templates for more details on their usage.
[edit] Newsroom
If you are unsure about the wording on a news item, or whether it should be included at all, list it here. Other editors will review the item and add it as appropriate.
